LEARNING THE BASICS OF FLORAL FOAM

Rainbow Foam bricks from Oasis are meant to be seen in floral arrangements.

FLORAL FOAM for fresh materials

The basic green brick is still a staple of flower arranging, but there are lots of variations now that make arranging even more interesting and fun.  13 colors of Rainbow Foam® bricks are offered by the Oasis® company, and now Rainbow Foam®  Powder for odd shaped containers, or to layer in different colors to enhance clear containers.

Rainbow Foam is the first to be used for fresh, dried or silk flowers.  (read more about Rainbow Foam in FAQs)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • always soak foam before using
  • soak bricks holes down
  • let foam float, do not force it under water
  • foam cuts easily with a knife
  • do not reuse foam, it may harbor bacteria that will cause arrangements to wilt quickly
There are myriad shapes available of floral foam, some of which are in their own containers.

Foam Holders for varied uses

FLORAL FOAM
When arranging with floral foam, try to position each stem carefully and not remove and replace it, as this may cause an air space that can interfere with water absorption by the stem.

With weak stems, you may make a starter hole with an ice pick or other small object to prevent the stem from breaking.

Oasis Foam design rings

DESIGN RINGS  The foam is affixed to a black plastic tray that makes it easy to transport and easy to water. These rings are perfect for table decorations at weddings and banquets or at home.

ATTACHING FOAM TO CONTAINER
Attach floral foam securely to the container using waterproof tape, as shown. Taping on the sides, rather than through the middle, will interfere less with center placement of stems.      waterproof floral tape attaches foam to containersWhen taping foam to a container, run a piece of tape around the edge of the container to secure the tape ends.

You may also use STYX mounting adhesive to attach anchor pins to the bottom of the container.

When using pin holders, fine stems may be positioned more readily by adding a little floral foam to the needlepoint.  Use a small piece of netting or old stocking material beneath the floral foam to facilitate removal of the foam when you disassemble the arrangement.

Prepare foam to extend 1 to 1 1/2 inches above the edge of the container.  This will facilitate adding material around the outside to cover the rim of the container and the tape.
