Step-by-step directions

Start by placing a soaked brick of floral foam for fresh flowers in a design dish sized for a full brick. If you will be carrying the arrangement to another location or giving it as a gift, you may want to use waterproof tape to secure the foam in the container. Tape across the short ends rather than the middle so that the tape does not interfere with insertion of stems.

1.) Start by placing red carnations to form the outside frame of the design. Add foliage at either end to emphasize the elongated shape. 2.) Fluff up red sisal filler and insert between the carnations.  Pull the sisal fibers apart to volumize it so that it creates a cloud of texture among the flowers.

After adding sisal, be careful to find a path for remaining stems through the fibers.

3.) A touch of white in a spikey form adds accents and variety. 4.) The foliage used in this photo is nandina in winter color, but depending on your locale, use the foliage of your choice and seek out small leaved selections with red coloring.
5.) Chartreuse colored Hypericum berries add color and another shape. 6.) Pick some variegated foliage from your garden - ivy, pieris, holly - your choice to add highlights and interest
7.) A touch of seeded eucalyptus gives one more shape to the design.  Add it in groups to give it importance.

The crowning touch is a drizzling of apple green bullion wire to give the arrangement a holiday sparkle. Lay wire loosely all over the surface of the design, as much or as little as you like. Each roll has 820 feet of wire, so drizzle to your heart's content!

Try your hand at creating a holiday masterpiece.
