LEARNING THE BASICS - CONDITIONING FLOWERS


 

Conditioning refers to the preparation of plant material to help it retain its freshest possible state for the longest period of time.  You will be able to enjoy your arrangements longer if you condition the plant material properly.

Cut stem ends vertically about 1/2" and stand in deep water for several hours.
Juniperus

Cut stem ends vertically about 1", scrape a little of the bark off at the bottom,  then stand in deep water for several hours.

Laburnum
Golden Chain
Place stem ends in boiling water for 60 seconds, protecting foliage with a wrap of newspaper, then stand in deep water for several hours.

Cut stems as long as possible. Stand in deep water for several hours.

Dip stem ends in boiling water, protecting foliage with a wrap of newspaper, then stand in deep water for several hours.

Stand in deep water for several hours.  Carefully remove brown pollen-covered anthers to prevent staining linens and clothing.

Stand in deep water for several hours.
Lunaria

Stand in deep water for several hours.  After "coins" have dried on the plant, you can clean off the outer coating of each one to have translucent additions to dried arrangements.

Dip stem ends in boiling water, protecting foliage with a wrap of newspaper, then stand in deep water for several hours.
Lilies require special attention to prepare them for use in floral design.  Carefully remove brown pollen-covered anthers from Lilies to prevent staining linens or clothing.

Cut stem ends vertically about 1", then place ends in boiling water for 30 seconds before removing to deep water for several hours. Shine leaves with a light rubbing of vegetable oil which also helps them retain moisture.

Cut stem ends vertically about 1" and stand in deep water for several hours.

Cut stem ends vertically about 1" and stand in deep water for several hours.

Stand in deep water for an hour, then hold in shallow water until used. Trim any edge damage to the natural leaf shape.

Cut stems as long as possible. Stand in deep water for several hours. Consider using flower preservative intended for bulb flowers.
