LEARNING THE BASICS ABOUT FLOWER ARRANGING
|
 |
Whether you want to pursue learning about flower arranging
or you just want to do your own thing, learning some basics
will make it a more enjoyable pastime and eliminate some
frustration by providing you with better results. |
|
WHAT YOU NEED
- plant materials
- a water container
That's basically all you need.
But there are LOTS of toys that make it more fun!
|
If you want to do something
more, then you may want to explore floral foam or a needlepoint
(frog) to hold the stems of your plant materials where you want
them to be. |
|
FLORAL FOAM
If you are using fresh flowers and foliage, you need floral foam that absorbs water to help materials
stay fresh. Dry foam can be used for dried materials.
Styrofoam can be used for artificial materials.
Oasis® Rainbow® Foam can be used for fresh, dried
or silk flowers.

NEEDLEPOINTS
Also called frogs or pinholders, these devises either have
needles secured to a heavy base, or holes in which you can place
stems, or some are deeper and have a wire mesh across the top to
help position stems. Some folks like to collect these as the
diversity of styles and appearance are interesting even when not
in use. |
CONTAINERS
A container can be anything that holds water and in some cases it need not even hold water
but serves simply as a foundation for your arrangement. Outside, you may want to use just floral foam in
a mesh or plastic holder to give it strength, because you don't care if the water drips on anything.
Generally, though, you will want a container that matches your intention for the arrangement. That
can be a vase to hold cut stems, a low bowl to hold a horizontal arrangement - the variations are endless.
What is important is that you choose a container that matches the picture you have in your mind's eye for
what you hope to create and one that will coordinate with the plant materials you plan to use in
size, style
and color. |
